Programming Philosophy:

TPN is always excited by the rich exchanges that happen as the many multi-cultured and multi-ethnic citizens of the African Diaspora encounter one another and share their cultural practices, traditions and experiences.

Since 1997, Taller Portobelo Norte has attracted professional and emerging artists, scholars and students from throughout the country interested in the visual and performing arts and cultures of the African Diaspora, ethnographic and anthropological research, Spanish and Latin American Studies, and responsible and ethical tourism.


Festival del Nazareno (Black Christ Festival) Artist Retreat - Oct 16th - Oct 23rd:

Come experience the energy and atmosphere of the 2010 Festival del Nazareno (also known as the Black Christ Festival).

Participants will have the opportunity to make their manda - an offering to El Nazareno - by joining pilgrims on the road Maria Chiquita to Portobelo, a roughly five hour walk. This retreat is especially well suited to photographers, who will have the opportunity to explore the transformation of Portobelo from sleepy bayside town, to densly packed festival full of religious fervor and secular amusements.

2010 Summer Art Colony in Portobelo, Panama - July 4 - July 25th:

In 2010, Taller Portobelo Norte is offering artists 2 or 3 week residencies in Portobelo, Panama. We invite artists of all disciplines and media to submit project proposals for work to be developed during the 14 or 21 day residency.

TPN Summer Art Colony participants are selected based on their dedication to their art practice, artistic innovation, and craftsmanship.

Joie de Vivre Senegal Arts & Culture Tour - May 30th - June 6:

Join TPN in Dakar, Senegal from May 30th to June 6th to celebrate the 2010 Dakar Art Biennial.

TPN will be exploring the beauty of West African art and artists by taking part in the Biennial festivities, visiting art galleries and museums and speaking privately with artists in their studios.

While in Senegal we will be travel to Goree Island, home of the infamous Slave Castle, Pink Lake, where we’ll surf the sand dunes in four-wheelers, and Toubab Diallos' Sobe Bade Art Colony, offering classes in Senegalese Dance and Batiking.

A trip to Dakar, of course, isn't complete without taking time to enjoy its' excellent French and West African restaurants, never-ending markets and vendors, white sand beaches, and of course, its' nightlife! We'll be making nightly outings to party at Dakars’ many concerts and nightclubs featuring internationally acclaimed artists and musicians.
